A 17-year-old resident of McKinney has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self, a Republican serving Texas’ third congressional district. Campaign officials confirmed the detention and revealed that federal investigators believed the minor had been radicalized and was preparing a terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State. The alleged target of the plot was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event that was to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other prominent guests.
The timeline of the investigation began in early October. According to the representative’s campaign manager, the FBI took the teen into custody on October 5. The congressman’s team was not immediately notified of the arrest; instead, they learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. Upon receiving this information, the campaign was briefed that federal agents had been monitoring the teen and that the suspect was believed to be acting as a lone wolf, though officials took the threat seriously.
Representative Self, who is currently seeking a third term in office, stated that he responded to the news with a measured approach, drawing on his background in military combat deployments. He noted that while the situation warranted increased vigilance, his prior experience helped him maintain composure. He explained that the primary immediate concern was determining whether the suspect was operating independently or as part of a larger group. Consequently, his team adjusted their situational awareness and security protocols as early voting continued across the state.
The representative’s wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also took the threat seriously, given her familiarity with the risks associated with public service. Self acknowledged that while he has received threats in the past, this was the first instance where the situation escalated to the point of an arrest. He emphasized that the seriousness of the incident was understood by his team, who recognized the potential for a significant event had the plot been carried out.
Despite the alleged plot, Representative Self attended the targeted chili cook-off on October 17 as planned. He reported that the event proceeded without incident, during which he judged 19 different varieties of chili and three pots of beans. He described the occasion as delightful and noted that nothing happened to disrupt the program. Following the event, he continued his regular campaigning activities, including greeting voters at polling stations.
The arrest occurs against the backdrop of Representative Self’s prominent stance on religious and cultural issues. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and asserting the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. This legislative action has been a focal point of his campaign, particularly within his district, which includes McKinney.
Local politics in McKinney have also seen heightened tension regarding religious institutions. In August, the city council unanimously approved a site plan for the expansion of a local mosque, a decision that followed hours of contentious public comment. This approval was later followed by an effort to recall several council members, adding another layer of local political debate to the broader context of the alleged plot.
Evan Hunt, the representative’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, publicly condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. As the investigation continues, the identity of the 17-year-old has not been publicly released. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but had not yet responded as of the time of this report.
Moving forward, Representative Self intends to continue his campaign efforts without alteration. He stated that the incident will not deter him from alerting the public to what he views as a significant political ideology. His team plans to maintain their current level of security and awareness while proceeding with their scheduled activities to engage with voters in the district.
